With a gladiatorial heritage, Carmarthen’s sturdy Roman defences can still be seen to this day. Carmarthen is thought to be the birthplace of Merlin the Wizard of Arthurian legend; his statue can be seen along Merlin’s Walk. The Welsh name for the town of Carmarthen is Caerfyrddin; ‘Caer’ translates to ‘Fort’ and ‘Myrddin’- the English word for Merlin.
