Swansea is Wales' second-largest city, and sits on the five-mile sweep of Swansea Bay. An ideal base for a holiday in Wales and exploring the South West region, as it has numerous restaurants and attractions as well as a vibrant night life.
Swansea was granted city status in 1969 and since then it has also evolved rapidly particularly in recent years. The City Centre has extended seaward into the award-winning Marina and Maritime Quarter, where you'll find attractions including the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea Museum, the Dylan Thomas Centre and the LC leisure complex and waterpark.
In the City Centre of Swansea youll find over 200 shops ranging from high-street brands to charming boutiques selling everything from clothing to homeware. You will also find Wales largest indoor market, where a lively atmosphere awaits along with fresh locally produced cuisine such as cockles, larvae bread and Gower Salt Marsh Lamb which is produced from sheep farmed on the salt marshes of the Loughor Estuary. Also, dont forget to try freshly baked traditional Welsh Cakes! Swansea also boasts excellent sporting facilities including the Wales National Pool (the only 50m swimming pool in Wales), and the Liberty Stadium, a 20,000-seat venue which is home to Barclays Premier League club Swansea City FC and The Ospreys Rugby Team.
Swansea is rich in history and culture and this can be found in the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery which is named after its founder Richard Glynn Vivian, the fourth son of John Henry Vivian; owner of the largest copper works in Swansea. The gallery has been open since July 1911 and houses a wonderful collection of work by old masters, porcelain collected from all over the world, as well as that from Swansea itself. The 20th century is also well represented with a mixture of sculptures and paintings. Despite being Wales second largest city, Swansea has numerous urban and country parklands and is regularly featured in the Wales in Bloom awards. These wide open spaces coloured by seasonal flowers and trees make Swansea a popular location for festivals and events throughout the year including Swansea Bay Festival and Escape in the Park.
There is also a plentiful mix of indoor and outdoor attractions, such as Vue or Odeon cinemas, bowling or Plantasia to the sea facing Swansea Prom. A great solution to the unpredictable welsh weather! Swansea Prom is a great place to enjoy a bike ride, rollerskate or for an enjoyable stroll. Along the way you will see attractions such as Singleton Boating Lake, Pitch and Putt, Blackpill Lido (an exceptional childrens playground), Southend Gardens and Swansea Bay Rider (a small train with carriages which travels up and down the prom). You will also find plenty of restaurants, pubs and Inns dotted along the prom. If you make it all the way to Mumbles be sure to save space for an iceceam from Verdis who make delicious Sundaes from their own icecream.
FBM holidays has thought carefully about where to select new cottages and holiday homes and Swansea was the result and its not hard to see why. What makes Swansea an interesting and diverse city is that three quarters of it is bordered by sea (The Loughor Estuary, Swansea Bay and the Bristol Channel) which means that you can enjoy all the facilities of holidaying in a city but a short walk or drive away you can relax and spend the day on the beach, so there is something that is sure to please the whole family.
