Mwnt is a small and ancient parish in the county of Ceredigion in Mid Wales. Mwnt is around 5 miles from the popular seaside town of Cardigan which is the second largest town in the county. Mwnt got its name from the prominent, steep, conical hill that rises above the beach and is seen as a landmark for much of Cardigan Bay.
Mwnt is particularly known for its beach, from which bottlenose dolphins can be seen, and the best viewing times of year are April - September. The Daily Mail once listed it in their top ten loveliest hidden beaches in Europe which gives you an idea of how unique and special this place is. The beach is relatively small compared with others in Ceredigion and the nearby Pembrokeshire Coast National Park but it is no less spectacular in its own way. A small sandy cove backed by hills covered in lush green grass that drop down into the gleaming blue sea, Mwnt beach is the perfect place to relax with the family as children can be kept in plain sight, and being more difficult to get to means that the beach is not always first choice and usually quieter than others in the area. If you happen to wonder on the hills above you will find an old lime kiln which is an interesting reminder of how the industry once was here.
Nearby you will come across Mwnt Church also known as the Church of the Holy Cross. The church has been there since the 6th Century and is an example of the medieval sailors chapel of ease. The site is said to have been used since the age of the saints, however the current building is more likely to be from the 14th century. The tiny whitewashed chapel presents a unique scene as it sits alone on the hillside above the sea. Most definitely worth a visit!
Mwnt is in a convenient location being near to some of the larger villages and towns of Ceredigion. If you fancy a spot of shopping try visiting the maritime town of Aberaeron which also has some wonderful eateries, making a great day out. Theres also the town of Cardigan which boasts a cinema, theatre, art galleries and much more.
The town of Aberystwyth also presents lots of interesting attractions. Take a stroll along Marine Terrace which overlooks North Beach. This genteel activity goes back to the Victorian era when the town first became a bustling seaside resort. Aberystwyth is also home to the National Library of Wales which was founded in 1911. The library now contains over 5 million books in many languages. Among its manuscripts is the oldest existing Welsh text, the 12th Century Black Book of Carmarthen. If you prefer to be out and about then try a visit to Constitution Hill which is at the Northern End of North beach on the headland. At 430ft high, Constitution Hill boasts spectacular views of up to 60 miles from the Llyn to Strumble Head. If youre unsure that the view at the top is worth the walk up then you can always catch a ride on the Cliff Railway. Victorians started doing this in 1896 and today the railway is the UKs longest electric funicular and probably the slowest too as it goes at a heart stopping 4mph!
This part of Ceredigion is a wonderful place to stay for those seeking a more remote romantic escape in Wales. As well as being near to some of the popular seaside towns you also have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the countryside and coastal scenery on many of the walking paths or nature reserves.
