Druidstone

Broad Haven near Druidstone

Nestled in one of the calmer and remote areas of Pembrokeshire, Druidstone sits on the hillside overlooking Druidstone beach. This wonderful village is a perfect place to escape for couples on a romantic mini break. The beach stretches for a mile in length and is backed by dramatic cliffs. Over the years numerous travel writers have described Druidstone Beach as their favourite beach along the British Isles and it’s not hard to see why. There’s plenty of room on the beach to explore, including caves and rock pools and if you’re also travelling with your four legged canine companion, they are sure to love it too!

Druidstone beach is not the only beach nearby. In fact the village sits ideally alongside the coast of St Brides Bay, inbetween the beaches of Newgale and Little Haven. Being so close to the coastline means watersports are in abundance. Try kitesurfing at Newgale or sea kayaking at Little Haven. If the idea of getting out on the water sounds like fun but you prefer to sit back and relax whilst someone else does the work then why not take a boat trip out to one of the nearby islands such as Skomer, Grassholm or Skokholm. Skomer Island has many accolades, including being known as a National Nature Reserve, a site of scientific special interest and also a special protection area. Around the island you might be lucky to spot bottlenose dolphins, porpoises and seals. For bird watchers this excursion is a must, as Skomer is best known for its large sea bird population including Atlantic Puffins, Manx Shearwaters, Razorbills and Great Cormorants to name but a few. Grassholm is also home to a large bird colony. In fact it is a National Nature Reserve because it is the third most important site in the world for gannets. It is a breeding site for over 39,000 pairs of gannets and supports around 10% of the total world population. Boat Trips are available with various boat companies including Venture Jet which is based in St Davids.

After all the outdoor exploring, warm up and rest your feet at the Swan Inn based in Little Haven. The Swan Inn holds the AA award for the Best Pub in Wales 2010-2011, and uses plenty of fresh local produce on their menu. The Inn has a great outdoor patio area where you can enjoy watching the tide with a refreshing beverage in hand.

Conveniently the town of Haverfordwest is only a short drive from Druidstone, here you can find a multitude of shops as well as a cinema, library and leisure centre which is ideal if the weather is a bit miserable!

Wildlife enthusiasts will love staying in this beautiful part of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and couples will enjoy its remoteness from the busier seaside resorts.
