Location
The name Martletwy existed in the middle ages and there is a 12th century church in the heart of the woodland Minwear, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. The former dominance of the Commandery of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem (Slebech) and the remains of the Sisters House known as Systerne House which once accommodated pilgrims. The Martletwy area lies in the Pembrokeshire coalfield and was exploited in the Tudor days on a small scale but owing to the anthracites special qualities it was sold in London and exported across Europe. The area is now a walkers and cyclers paradise, the Landsker Borderland and Daugleddau Trails pass through Minwear woods and neighbouring Landshipping just 1 and a half miles providing access onto a much wider network of footpaths. The estuary and surrounding woodland is full of flora and fauna with many species of birds and wild life living here. There is also the unlikely home of a vineyard, Cwm Deri, the only commercial vineyard in Pembrokeshire.
